(Smith) Big, bright steelhead are the reward for anglers fishing the Smith River as the river drops from a recent storm. Tim and Susan Carlin of Arnold caught three huge steelhead estimated to be in the 18 to 20 lb. class on Saturday, January 7 while fishing with Kevin Brock of Kevin Brock’s Guide Service. “It’s difficult to weigh wiggling fish in the net,” noted Brock. The steelhead were caught on 8 lb. P-Line CFX leader. “One of them ran 50 yards upstream when first hooked, and just smoked the drag,” stated Brock.
Terry Terlacher reported catching a 14.5 lb. wild steelhead on the Smith River with Kevin Brock on New Years Day. “It was a great way to spend the day,” said the elated Terlacher.
“The Smith River has slowly dropped all week long with nice sunny days and pretty darn good fishing,” said Phil Desautels of Smiling Phil’s Guide Service on January 7. “We have no rain in the forecast, but there are a good number of fish here with very little pressure. All week long there have only been 6 to 10 boats on the river.” “Every boat has been catching fish,” he tipped. “The fish have been spread out everywhere.” Bill and Leora DeBacker of Crescent City landed 4 steelhead including a nice 1pound buck that was almost 38 inches long. Jason Carbaugh from Laytonville and Korey Williams of Ukiah went 2 fish for 4 hook-ups including Korey’s very first steelhead. Mike and Larry Tronstad from Napa went 1 for 4 hook-ups. “All of the fish were caught using a small piece of roe, shrimp pink yarn and Fishpills,” he noted.
