The Town of Klamath, Del Norte County

Klamath, 32 miles south of Crescent City, sits on the mouth of the mighty Klamath River and is located within the Yurok reservation. For centuries, the Yurok Indian tribe has called the banks of the Klamath home. Early settlements on the south end of the county depended upon the river waters for transportation and commerce.

Today the town is known for its diverse recreational activities. It is located in the center of Redwood National and State Parks and provides services and lodging in cabins, motels, bed and breakfast inns, a hostel (with modern facilities for 30 visitors) and hundreds of campsites in an area seven miles long.

Klamath Salmon Festival

Both river and community are celebrated annually with the Klamath Salmon Festival, which features a traditional salmon barbeque, cultural workshops and demonstrations, vendor booths, parade, smoked salmon taste off, raffle prizes and traditional Indian stick games.

Attractions and Activities

One of the most popular attractions, Trees of Mystery offers a walk through the Redwood forest to the Sky Trail where you can ride a gondola through the canopy of the forest for breathtaking view of the tops of these towering trees. After the ride, you can visit the Native American Museum, one of the largest privately owned collections of Native American artifacts in the world.

At the Tour Thru Tree, visitors can drive, bike or walk through a 700-year-old redwood tree. For the more adventurous, take a Jet Boat Tour up the spectacular Klamath River where you can see bears, deer, elk, osprey, eagles and otters while hearing about the river’s history, local Native American culture and wildlife.

Recreational activities in Klamath are abundant with the mighty Klamath River, hiking, great surfing, salmon and steelhead fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, and some of the most amazing scenery to be found on California’s far northern coast.
