The confluence of the north and south forks of the Smith River is easily visible from Highway 199 near the Gasquet Ranger Station Visitors Center. The brilliantly turquoise water has a clarity unrivaled by any other river in California, as it is the only river in the state that is not dammed at any point in its watershed.
The westernmost part of the Klamath River is calm, which is suitable for canoeing. A good river access point is along Highway 169 about 23-25 miles south of Crescent City.

Heavy winter rainfall swells the north fork of the Smith River into a pulsating, heart-pounding path of whitewater that bobs and weaves through the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Because the Smith River is not dammed at any point on its system, all of the water from its watershed feeds into the river, creating a constantly-changing river ride unlike any other in California.
