The North Coast Marine Mammal Center rescues and rehabilitates marine mammals that are stranded, sick or injured along the coast of Del Norte and Humboldt counties. The non-profit center has rehabilitated hundreds of marine mammals since it was founded by a veterinarian in 1983. Self-guided tours are available. Donations are accepted.

What's New at the North Coast Marine Mammal Center:

The Center is currently caring for seven flippered guests, including Mariny, a northern elephant seal that arrived in September, and Stella, a Steller sea lion that was found in June in Gold Beach, Oregon. Not even a week old, Stella had become separated from her mother and would not have survived. She will learn and grow at the facility until next spring, when she will be mature enough to survive in the ocean on her own.

Two California sea lions called Tonka and Raine were released earlier this year, but both lost weight and became lethargic, so they are back at the Center to get healthy. After a group of harbor seal pups were released at the end of September, one pup called Teddy became restranded and is currently being cared for at the Center.

Most of the animals that come to the Center are found on local beaches by walkers, swimmers or surfers. If you see a seal or sea lion on the beach, do not go near it or try to chase it back in the water; the animal may just be resting. Note the exact location and call the Marine Mammal Center.
