Horseback Riding in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, along with many other types of activities, has trails for horseback riding. View some of the trails below:

Howland Hill Road

This 10-mile paved and gravel meandering road features impressive and stunningly beautiful groves of majestic, moss-hung coastal Redwoods.

Trailhead: Take Highway 101 from Crescent City to Highway 199 and turn east. Drive about 6 miles to Howland Hill Road.

Mill Creek Horse Trail

Mill Creek, a crystal-clear stream bordered by thick forest, guides you along this easy to moderate 9- to 11-mile loop trail through majestic redwoods. The area offers several side-trails for excellent fishing. This trail is available for day use only. The north ford is closed October 15 to March 31 and the south ford is closed October 15 to May 31 to protect the salmon spawning grounds, as the trail crosses over the creek multiple times. In fact, a single crossing by a hiker or horse during salmon spawning season can crush up to 80 percent of the eggs or developing young in a nest, so it’s important to respect seasonal trail closures.

Trailhead: From Crescent City, turn east onto Highway 199 and drive about 6 miles to Howland Hill Road. Turn right and drive 5 miles to the parking area on the left side of the road.

Nickerson Ranch Trail

Magnificent towering Redwoods and streamside vegetation are the attractions on this flat two-mile trail. As you Across the creek is an old ranch, where only the orchard remains.

Trailhead: From Crescent City, take Highway 101 South and make a left onto Elk Valley Road. Turn right onto Howland Hill Road. The trailhead is at the Boy Scout Tree Trail parking area.
