Hoseback Riding in Redwood National and State Parks

Horses and horseback riding more your type of thing to do? Redwood National and State Parks has a few trails for horseback riding.

Little Bald Hills Trail

This steep trail will take you up through thickly wooded old-growth redwoods into sunnier Douglas fir forest and finally up to a knobcone pine forest with huckleberry and azalea. Lean back in the saddle and you might catch a glimpse of a hawk as you ride through open prairies dappled with wildflowers. The trail is accessible from Howland Hill Road, and 3 ½ miles in there is a camp with a corral for overnight horse use, picnic tables, fire pits, bear-proof lockers and toilets. Bring drinking water.

You can ride another 5 miles beyond the campsite on the Paradise Flat Trail in the Smith River National Recreation Area to get to South Fork Road.

Trailhead: Trailhead located off Howland Hill Road, 7.5 mi east of Crescent City, or 1.5 mi off South Fork Road east of Hiouchi.

Redwood Creek Trail

This trail travels through the heart of the Redwood National Park. It follows an abandoned logging road. This is the best area in the Park for riding. There are four trail loop options- 7-mile, 14-mile, 20-mile and 32-mile with two stock-ready camps for overnight pack trips.

Trailhead: Begins in Orick next to the Orick Rodeo Grounds off Highway 101, about 1 mile north of the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center. Ask at a visitor center regarding trailhead access.
